Miss Rwanda Convicted of Drunk Driving and Driving Without a License
The Kicukiro Primary Court in Kigali City has convicted the current Miss Rwanda of charges related to drunk driving and driving without a license. She was sentenced to a suspended three-month prison term and fined 190,000 Rwandan Francs.
Divine Muheto, who had been in detention for 18 days, was acquitted of the charge of fleeing the scene of an accident. The judge ordered her immediate release, although she was not present during the court ruling.
The prosecution had sought a sentence of one year and eight months of imprisonment but was also absent during the announcement of the verdict. It is unclear whether they will appeal the decision.
Muheto is the daughter of Assistant Commissioner of Police Francis Muheto. Earlier this week, the police spokesperson told reporters that her father’s position as a senior police officer “does not exempt her from prosecution” for the offenses.
